  • Back in 1997, "Big Beat" and such became more and more mainstream and at this point there didn't seem to be one rock band anymore, that didn't experiment with samples and drum computers, while all dance and electronic music producers incoporated guitar and rock elements into their tracks. This compilation is the half-arsed try to cash-in on that trend and give it a name. ("Progressive Rave") While mixing Rock and Electronic is still a thing people do 20 years later, the term didn't catch on and honestly, this compilation seemed a bit clueless to begin with. It's like they started out with a few fitting tracks (Raver's Nature's distortion porn "You Blow My Mind", David Bowie's Drum 'n' Bass experiment "Little Wonder" or Apollo 440's Van Halen/Breakbeat mix "Ain't Talkin' Bout Dub"), but then had to use fillers immediately. You get Hip Hop (Quad City DJ's "The Train") next to industrial (Rammstein's "Du Hast"), Synthie Pop (Depeche Mode's "It's No Good") or "pure" club tracks (DJ Quicksilver's "Free").I gotta admit, the result isn't bad. 3/4 of the tracks stand the test of time and they even put some bonafide classics like Sigue Sigue Sputnick's "Love Missile F1-11" or Wang Chung's "Dancehall Days" on it. It's just that the tracklist seems completely random and desperate. It's a fun compilation to listen to, but there is a reason why they never made a 2nd one.
